Kuroda-sama is a character mentioned in the FX limited series, Shōgun. He was the former ruler of Japan, before the Taikō.
Biography[]
Kuroda-sama was ruler of Japan. According to Lady Mariko, he was known to be a corrupt and murderous man. He was murdered by Lord Akechi Jinsai, Mariko's father, whose entire clan were subsequently punished by death, with Mariko being the only survivor because she had been married away to Buntaro.
Historical background[]
Lord Kuroda is based on the historical figure Oda Nobunaga (織田 信長, 1534-1582), an infamous daimyō warlord from the Sengoku period who was close to subduing all of Japan, for which he was nicknamed the Tenka-bito (天下人, meaning "person under heaven") due to his political dominance. Nobunaga was forced to commit suicide in 1582 when his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide (whom Akechi Jinsai is based upon) rebelled and ambushed him in the Honnō-ji Temple in Kyoto. As both of his legitimate heirs died with him during the incident, Nobunaga's position of authority was succeeded by a loyalist retainer Toyotomi Hideyoshi (whom the character of Taikō is based upon).
