Sugiyama Josui (杉山 如水) is a character in the FX limited series, Shōgun, who is portrayed by Toshi Toda.
Biography[]
Sugiyama is a member of the Council of Regents. He oversees a central region in Japan. In addition, he is a descendant of one of the richest samurai families in the country. He is present for the discussions around the impeachment of Lord Toronaga, however he keeps his opinions to himself and lets Ishido take the reins.
Later, after Toronaga resigns, The Council of Regents meets and discusses impeaching Toronaga, however Ishido reminds them this isn’t possible since the Council is now incomplete after Toronaga resignation. They all suggest a replacement but can't seem to agree on whom.
Lord Ishido takes all of the regents hostage in the castle, claiming that there is a threat to the heir, and insists on a vote for Lord Ito to be the fifth regent. Lord Sugiyama votes no, insistent that there is no real threat to the heir. Sugiyama tells Ishido he is a disgrace to the memory of Taiko and that he should let them as hostages go.
Lord Ishido doesn’t take kindly to this, and ambushes Sugiyama in the woods, killing him and all those with him, later claiming it was the work of bandits.
Personality[]
Sugiyama is strong and confident and isn't afraid to go against the tide.
