Historical Background[]
Nakamura Hidetoshi is based on the historical figure of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣 秀吉, 1537-1598), one of the major players during the later phase of the Sengoku period of Japan. After the death of his liege lord Oda Nobunaga (whom the character Lord Kuroda is based upon), he took up the reigns of finishing the conquest of Japan, which earned him the title Taikō (太閤, a retired chief advisor to the Emperor). Boasted by his achievements in reunifying Japan, Hideoyoshi led two major invasions of the Korean Peninsula in 1592 and 1597, both of which ended in failure due to the intervention of the Chinese Ming dynasty. The setbacks in Korea took tolls on his health and he died the following year, leaving his only surviving heir, the five-year-old Toyotomi Hideyori (whom Yaechiyo is based upon) to a group of ally lords known as the Council of Five Elders (五大老), which the Council of Regents is based upon.
